So what new in real estate? Let's start with the House of Representatives passing a bill that allows people who in 2014 needed to sell their property for less than their mortgage (short sale), to avoid paying income tax on that amount forgiven by the bank. This bill retroactively takes effect for all of 2014. We are currently waiting to see if the Senate will also vote in favor. This is an important tool that if extended into 2015, will help people free themselves of homes they can either no longer afford or can use due to job transfers or hardship circumstances. It's good for the economy and the real estate market in general for many reasons.
Also this week, the Treasury Department announced that distressed home owners who complete a short sale or deed-in-lieu will now be offered $10,000 in relocation assistance, a $7,000 increase over what they previously received. The full article about changes to the HAMP program can be read by clicking here. These funds that are being dispersed do not stem from taxpayers, but rather from fines paid by lenders who were being investigated for bad practices during the Great Recession. Yes it's complicated, but necessary to the real estate recovery which benefits us all.
I still like following Keeping Current Matters. The KCM Crew wrote a terrific blog entitled 5 Demands to Make on Your Real Estate Agent. It is a great read for anyone looking to hire a real estate agent.
