Fairfield, population of 58,000, is located on the edge of Long Island Sound just 60 miles from Manhattan. Modern Fairfield is traversed by U.S. 1, Interstate 95, and the historic Merritt Parkway. It has two Metro-North Railroad stations and is just a I hour and 15 minute train ride from New York City’s Grand Central Station. The focal point of Fairfield’s downtown is “The Green” and its picturesque Gazebo. The Green is the site of many year-round events including concerts and art exhibitions featuring many local artists and craftsmen. Fairfield’s numerous salt-water public beaches as well as a lovely fresh water lake offer a variety of water based activities for residents of all ages. Cultural activities including local theater and art galleries in addition to parks and woodlands, nature trails and playgrounds, golf, tennis and shopping can all be found within the town’s borders making Fairfield an ideal “home town”. Sections of the Southport neighborhood, with its harbor, as well as parts of Greenfield Hill and the magnificent older Colonial homes adjacent to the downtown area are designated historical districts and testify to Fairfield rich heritage. |
